Going Green With The

“It’s another beautiful night for baseball as we celebrate Earth Day here at Chukchansi Park! Your Fresno Grizzlies lead the San Jose Giants 5-0 in the 3rd inning. Now let’s head down to the field with Captain Grizzly, Parker T. Bear,

Eddie the Owl, and our G-Force for some in-game fun,” boomed Stephen Rice, the Grizzlies broadcaster. The crowd roared with excitement as they watched Parker T. Bear and his friends run out of the first base dugout and onto the field. The G-Force was pulling a wagon with a large amount of soda cans while Parker and Eddie were dressed in all green.

“Hey Grizzlies fans! As you can see, our G-Force members, Toni and Dillon, have a TON of soda cans with them. Over the next 30 seconds, Parker and Eddie will each try to

4

build a pyramid using these soda cans and whoever makes the tallest stack will win! Are you ready to watch Parker and Eddie play Soda Can Stack?” yelled Captain Grizzly. Once again, the crowd cheered, eager to see who would win. Toni and Dillon put the soda cans on the ground between the two mascots. Parker and Eddie looked at

the pile of cans, readying themselves for the competition. “On your mark, get set, GO,” shouted Captain Grizzly. Parker and Eddie quickly grabbed the cans and started stacking. The two mascots were in a close matchup, but Parker took a late lead as the time continued counting down. As the clock ran down, the crowd’s chanting got louder and louder, cheering on the two mascots.

“Park-er, Edd-ie! “Park-er, Edd-ie!”

The mascots used the crowd’s motivation for the final seconds, making their stacks as high as possible.

5

“5, 4, 3, 2, 1, time!” said Captain Grizzly. The crowd gave a round of applause as both mascots took a look at the other’s stack. Eddie’s soda cans were as tall as his beak, while Parker’s stack was taller than him! “Parker wins!!” exclaimed Captain Grizzly. “That was an amazing battle, but the bear stacked his soda cans higher.” Parker lifted his arms up in

victory while Eddie shrugged and dropped his head. Eddie started to clean up his stack while Parker ran off the field. G-Force helped Eddie with the soda cans, putting them in a blue recycling bin. After G-Force and Eddie finished cleaning the soda cans, they realized Parker had not put his stack away. Captain

Grizzly also noticed the mess Parker made and said, “Parker, can you please come back out and put your soda cans away?” Parker hurried back onto the field with a black trash bin. The bear grabbed the cans with his paws and started putting them into the bin. A few seconds later, Captain Grizzly noticed Parker was using the wrong color bin to put the cans away.

6

“Parker, Parker, you have the wrong color bin! The bin you are using to put your cans away is used for trash, not recycling. Here at the Grizzlies, we aim to create healthier environments for you and the future. Something as simple as putting these soda cans into the right bin can help make our world cleaner.” Parker looked down at his black

trash bin and realized his mistake. He started to take the soda cans out of his trash bin and moved them to the blue recycling bin that G-Force was using for Eddie’s cans. Parker finished putting the cans away and left the field feeling more excited than when he beat Eddie at stacking the soda cans.

“Alright, Grizzlies fans! Now that we taught Parker a valuable lesson about recycling, let’s head back up to our broadcaster for more information about the benefits of going green,” cheered Captain Grizzly. “Thanks, Captain Grizzly! That was an amazing

game of Soda Can Stack and a lesson about recycling. Going green is more than just recycling. It is simply a matter of replacing old habits with new ones. Each time you make a decision to conserve natural resources, you take another step towards healthier living,” said Stephen Rice, the Grizzlies broadcaster. “You can turn off lights when you leave a room, use less water by taking shorter showers, eat greener by supporting locally grown produce, and even carpool to school. Now that we have all learned more about going green, let’s get back to some GRIZZLIES BASEBALL!” Want To Learn More? You’re a Self-Care Star Take Care of Your Mental Health Taking care of your mental and physical health is important for your wellness. Practicing self-care will help you develop good habits and stay healthy. Let’s make a fortune teller with some self-care techniques you can try.

Piece of standard paper (8.5 x 11 in.)

Markers, color pencils, or crayons

SUPPLIES:

Scissors

6

Take an 8.5 x 11 in. sheet of paper.

Fold corner up until it meets the other side.

Fold other corner up until it meets the other side.

Cut off the rectangle portion.

Unfold it. You should now have a square piece of paper divided into four triangles.

Fold one corner square into the center of the paper.

7

8

9

10

11

12

Repeat with all corners.

Leaving the paper folded, flip it over.

Once again, fold the four corners into the center of the paper.

Leaving the paper folded, fold it in half again.

Using both hands, slip your thumb and index finger under the square flaps.

Create the fortune-teller shape by pushing up and in at the same time. You may need to fiddle with the center a little as well.

How to Play Find a friend or family member and ask them to pick a color. Moving the flaps in and out and side to side in time with the letters, spell out the color they have chosen. Open the fortune teller to reveal the numbers and ask them to pick one. Count out the number they have chosen by moving the flaps in and out and side to side. Ask them to pick another number and count it out in the same manner. This time ask them to pick a third number and reveal the self-care activity you have written on the inside flap under that number. Do the self-care activity under the inside flap of the number selected!

3

Flatten out your fortune teller. When flat, the fortune-teller should be square. On one side of the square, you will see four smaller squares. On this side, you are going to put colors. You can either color the whole square, a part of the square, or write the name of the color. It’s up to you.

Flip the fortune-teller over to the side with the triangles. On this side, there are 8 small triangles (within four larger triangles). Within the small triangles, write the numbers 1-8.

Finally, flip over the four larger triangles. In each of the smaller triangles, write one self-care activity. You will write down 8 total activities. Pick an example from the image above - or you can make up your own!

CHEETAH RUN! Cheetahs are the track stars of the cat world. They are designed to run very fast. Their flexible spine allows their front legs to stretch far with each stride, and their claws are hard and sharp like cleats, so they have excellent traction when running. While running, they can cover 20 to 22 feet in a single stride. A cheetah is off the ground more than half of their running time! Below, connect the dots in numerical order to create the cheetah and help it run fast! Later, learn how to draw a cheetah with Fresno Chaffee Zoo's own artist, Amber!
