Parker opened the envelope and read what was inside:

GETS ACTIVE

“Beep, beep” “Beep, beep”

Parker T. Bear’s alarm clock went off for the first time since the Fresno Grizzlies season ended. Parker was ready for some quiet and relaxation, which meant playing video games and eating ballpark food, his favorite. The furry, yellow bear got out of bed, went straight to the kitchen and grabbed a pretzel and some popcorn from the pantry. As he was settling down onto the couch, he heard the doorbell ring.

As Parker was reading the letter, Eddie started to tell Parker what he could do to get in shape and make these tasks easier.

“Who could be at the door on the first day of the offseason?” Parker asked himself.

“Parker, you can lift weights so it is easier to throw out t-shirts. You can even run the bases to improve on your footwork for dancing and to be quicker at giving out prizes. What do you think?” “But I want to play video games. We have plenty of days left before the season starts and I want to relax,” grumbled Parker. Eddie responded, “Just try it out! You’ll be surprised how fun it is and how much better you will feel next season”.

He got up from the couch to check WHO was there and saw his friend, Eddie the Owl. Parker opened the door and excitedly exclaimed, “Eddie, do you want to eat some popcorn and play video games with me?”

“No thank you, Parker,” Eddie said. “I actually came over to give you this letter.”

Confused, Parker replied, “What? A letter for me?”

Eddie handed Parker the letter and hooted, “take a look for yourself.”

“Fine, can I bring my pretzel at least?” Parker asked.

“Great job Parker. Now it’s time to lift weights. Catch your breath, drink some water, and eat this apple. You need to be hydrated and fueled before the next exercise.” Eddie said. Parker sipped on a water bottle and ate an apple from the owl. “I already feel faster, yet less tired. This is so cool!”

“No Parker, we are going to start eating healthier too. I have been growing delicious food in the Community GARden at the ballpark that I want you to try. These fruits and vegetables will give you plenty of energy throughout the day. If we combine this diet with my exercise plan, you will become a Super Bear.” “I like the sound of that!” Parker roared, putting his popcorn and pretzel away.

Eddie next grabbed two full milk cartons and placed them in front of Parker.

“Do you want me to drink these, too?” asked Parker.

“No!” exclaimed Eddie. “You will hold one in each hand while doing a squat.”

Parker sped to his room and changed into workout clothes, snapping his Fresno Grizzlies headband onto his forehead. He went outside to the field and waited for Eddie to return. “First, we will jog four laps around the bases to improve your footwork and stamina,” explained the eager owl. At first, Parker was struggling and gasping for air. “This is hard. I miss my couch,” Parker moaned.

Eddie showed Parker the exercise by holding two cartons of his own and lowered his body as if he were sitting in a chair. He stood back up, instructing Parker to copy him and do it 10 times. Parker started squatting, but halfway through asked Eddie what doing this exercise was going to help him with.

Eddie answered, “These will make your body strong and allow you to throw t-shirts even farther.” Parker said, “That is very important. I don’t want to upset the best fans in all of baseball.” Parker completed the rest of the squats and grinned with excitement, “I already feel like a Super Bear.”

“Do you want your fans to be upset because you didn’t give them their prizes in time and make fun of your footwork?” asked Eddie? “No! They need their prizes!” screamed the bear as he sprinted past Eddie and completed the laps in a flash.

Parker’s Prospects

“Phew, that was day one, Parker. Now it is time to eat a healthy meal,” said Eddie.

“I know a good pizza place down the road,” Parker bellowed excitedly.

“Not today. I will cook you a meal from the Community GARden. How does a hearty carrot soup sound, Parker?”

A free, exclusive Fresno Grizzlies fan club for fans ages 12 and under!

“Sounds really yummy!” Parker said enthusiastically.

Every Member Gets: •One FREE Reserved ticket voucher for every Grizzlies Sunday home game of the regular season •Run the bases after every Sunday home game •Membership card/badge •And MORE

“I will start cooking the meal at my house if you want to come join,” replied Eddie.

“How about this, friend. You can cook and I will continue to run around the bases. It is so fun and I feel so much better. Call me in when it is ready!” “Sounds like a plan. The more often you exercise, the better you will feel,” answered Eddie. After running some more and eating the carrot soup, Parker showed his gratefulness towards his best friend: “Eddie, I can’t thank you enough. Can we exercise like this every day during the offseason? I really enjoyed staying active and my body and mind feel better after doing the workout and eating those foods.”

“Yes Parker, we can do this every day. You will need some days to rest, but if you continue to eat and exercise like you did today, you will be ready to go for next season!” “I can’t wait for Grizzlies baseball to be back and to show off my new talents to the fans,” roared the new and improved Parker T. Bear.

How to Play Find a friend or family member and ask them to pick a color. Moving the flaps in and out and side to side in time with the letters, spell out the color they have chosen. Open the fortune teller to reveal the numbers and ask them to pick one. Count out the number they have chosen by moving the flaps in and out and side to side. Ask them to pick another number and count it out in the same manner. This time ask them to pick a third number and reveal the self-care activity you have written on the inside flap under that number. Do the self-care activity under the inside flap of the number selected!

Flatten out your fortune teller. When flat, the fortune-teller should be square. On one side of the square, you will see four smaller squares. On this side, you are going to put colors. You can either color the whole square, a part of the square, or write the name of the color. It’s up to you.

Flip the fortune-teller over to the side with the triangles. On this side, there are 8 small triangles (within four larger triangles). Within the small triangles, write the numbers 1-8.

Finally, flip over the four larger triangles. In each of the smaller triangles, write one self-care activity. You will write down 8 total activities. Pick an example from the image above - or you can make up your own!

CHEETAH RUN! Cheetahs are the track stars of the cat world. They are designed to run very fast. Their flexible spine allows their front legs to stretch far with each stride, and their claws are hard and sharp like cleats, so they have excellent traction when running. While running, they can cover 20 to 22 feet in a single stride. A cheetah is off the ground more than half of their running time! Below, connect the dots in numerical order to create the cheetah and help it run fast! Later, learn how to draw a cheetah with Fresno Chaffee Zoo's own artist, Amber!

Question: What does “Farm Grown” mean to you? Answer: Farm Grown means many things to me. From remembering the roots that have helped shape who you are today, to learning that thriving and growing are things that can get you far in life, to be farm grown is to have a strong connection to everything around you. Q: Why is it important to be involved in your community? A: Being involved within the community creates a wavelength of growth as a leader and as a person. From learning the value of being a servant leader to creating everlasting connections with local community members,

Lesley Machado Question: What does “Farm Grown” mean to you?

being engrained within the community is always something that can benefit all. It is able to connect bridges of all walks of life with the same goal of enhancing and developing something beautiful for all to thrive in. Q: What is your favorite part of being involved with agriculture? A: My fondest memory within agriculture is every time I had the opportunity to create a meaningful conversation with someone because I was establishing a genuine connection. Whether it was with my peers in my local community or even students from other states, I have been able to learn the power of a conversation and the true value behind a meaningful connection.

Answer: Farm Grown means everything that happens between farm to plate. There is so much work that happens in between that a lot of us don’t get to see. All of the work that is put in to make sure we get safe and healthy food and commodities all starts on a farm. Q: How do you stay active and healthy in your daily life? A: Most of how I stay active is working with and taking care of my animals including feeding, watering, cleaning, walking and doing daily chores in the barn. Another way is going to the gym with my Dad which also gives me another opportunity to spend time with him. Q: What advice would you give to another student who wants to get involved with agriculture? A: Some advice I would give to a student who wants to get involved in agriculture is don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Be curious and ask questions, look into your local FFA chapter to see what pathways and other opportunities they have to offer. Or reach out and talk to someone who works in an agriculture field. Q: How do you plan to remain involved with agriculture past high school? A: After high school I plan to be in an ag related field and learn more about jobs I might be interested in. After college I plan to stay involved in agriculture by supporting organizations like FFA and 4-H that teach youth about agriculture and give them amazing opportunities that help them grow.
